The LM317 is an adjustable three-terminal positive-voltage regulator which can be used as a constant current source for battery charging. This regulator IC is capable of supplying 1.5 A over an output-voltage range of 1.25 V to 37 V.
In this constant current battery charger circuit the voltage between 30 ohm resister connected across the adjustment terminal and the output terminal is always 1.25 volts. To achieve 1 Amp of current, we need a 1.2 ohm, 2 watt resistor. A diode of suitable ratings should be used to prevent reverse voltage to regulator from batteries when power is turned off.
